Our Student Teachers- Hello from Miss Palmer


Dear Parents,

I just wanted to introduce myself, my name is Aimee Palmer and I will be with 3/4EV for the remainder of the term. I’m currently in my last year of my primary teaching degree and look forward to working with Miss Vernon and the 3/4 team. As this is my last placement I have some experience with other schools in the ACT and am excited to learn as much as I can during my six weeks at Fraser Primary. I come from Miles Franklin Out of School Hours Care where I am the Director so whilst teaching is very different I do have lots of experience with primary aged children. I look forward to meeting you all during the term.

Our Student Teachers - Hello from Mrs Wells


 Hello Hogwarts families,

My name is Lauren Wells and I will be spending the next 6wks with Mrs Evans and The Potters as I complete my final teaching placement. I am very excited to be joining the Fraser Primary Community and meeting you all soon!
As I mentioned above, I really love running and have spent the past 15yrs training full time for the 400m hurdles. I have represented Australia at four Commonwealth Games, four World Championships and two Olympic Games. Through athletics I have travelled to many amazing countries and competed infront of 80 000 people at the Olympic Games! I am incredibly grateful for the experiences I have had and look forward to sharing some of them with you over the next few weeks.
I am currently working at Giralang Primary as a Learning Support Assistant (LSA) and will complete my primary teaching degree after my 6wks at Fraser. I love working with students and am looking forward to getting to know the 3/4 cohorts at Fraser.
Please don’t hesitate to come up and say hi if you see me around the school. Whilst I may be used to competing in front of thousands of people, I will still be nervous in front of 20 8-9yr olds!!

Tennis Program

This year we have been lucky enough for our Hot Shots Tennis program to be continued at Fraser.This means that all of our year 3/4 students will have an opportunity to learn and practise some tennis skills. Coach Gabby visits Fraser every Thursday and works with one of our classes, during the year all of our class groups will rotate through a series of tennis lessons. Coach Gabby is currently teaching our group of budding tennis super stars how to correctly volley a ball over the net with control.

History Inquiry - Diverse Communities

Last week we began our new History Inquiry - Diverse Communities. During the inquiry we will be exploring the diversity of people and places in our local community and beyond, and how people participate in their communities. Students study how places are represented geographically and how communities express themselves culturally and through civic participation. In class groups we have been sharing the heritage of our families and began learning about the diverse communities within Melbourne and the the history of the Pearl Divers and the community of Broome.

Cross Country

This week we participated in our annual cross country carnival. It was a beautiful day and we all did our best, walking or running around the cross country course. When we were not racing we were cheering on all the other age groups. Every person that participated in the cross country received points for their sports house and the winning house will be announced in a few weeks. The cross country teaches us all about having a go, even when something might be a bit hard and working as a team, it also helps to keep us fit and healthy.

Main Focus for Learning in Term 2

English

Reading
During Readers’ Workshop sessions, students will participate in daily mini lessons focussing on a range of strategies to comprehend non-fiction texts, such as ‘topic, sub-topic, detail’, ‘Boxes and bullets’, ‘Tic, Tac, Toe’. Students will have daily opportunities to read independently,  work towards their personal goals and make their thinking visible using a range of graphic organisers.

Writing
The text types we will focus on this term are writing to persuade, writing to inform and writing to explain.  This will include the appropriate structure and language features of each text type. We will also follow the writing cycle of planning, drafting,  editing (proofreading and re-crafting) and publishing written work. Students will regularly conference with the teacher in order to improve their writing and set goals.




Word Work
Students participate in a 20 minute word work session four times a week.
Mrs Evans - prefixes, suffixes, derivations, mnemonics
Miss Markos - revising long vowel sounds and graphemes such as ay, ou, ie, ea, oy, ir,  ue, aw, wh, ph
Miss Murphy & Merriel - alternate spelling for long and other vowel sounds
Mrs Van Audenaerde - revising double letter phonemes (ll, ss, ff, zz), consonant digraphs (ch, sh, th, ng) and long vowel sounds

Miss Vernon & Mr Arranz - revising graphemes (ay, ou, ie, ea, oy, ir,  ue, aw, wh, ph, ew, oe, au, ey), split digraphs (a_e, e_e, i_e, o_e, u_e), alternate spellings for single and double letter graphemes

Maths

Year 3
Problem solving, number patterns, symmetry, properties of 3D objects, data collection, multiplication, division and measurement

Year 4
Problem solving, properties of 2D shapes, Area, Perimeter, data collection and graphing, multiplication and division mental and written strategies


Science

Heating Up - Physical Science
The Heating Up inquiry provides opportunities for students to investigate different heat sources and how heat moves from one object to another. Through hands-on activities, students investigate the difference in conductivity of materials.



HaSS

Civic and Citizenship - How can I participate in my community?
This inquiry explores why people participate within communities and how students can actively participate and contribute. It introduces students to the values of fairness, care and compassion that underpin a civil society. The activities and case studies assist students to explore the motivations of different people who contribute to their community.

History - What is the role that people of diverse backgrounds have played in the development and character of the local community?
Students will investigate the features of a community, compare our local community with Broome and Melbourne and research the lives of Australians from diverse backgrounds including Theo Notaros, Fiona Wood, Sidney Myer, Terri Irwin, Anh Do and David Wirrpanda.

Health and PE

Fresh Tastes - Food and Me - Healthy Foods for Me
Students will review the Five Food Groups and their main nutrients. They will learn about the traffic light food categorisation system and explore cultural variation of lunch boxes from around the world.

Social and Emotional Learning (SELs) - Self-Management

Technologies

Digital Technologies
Students will be using problem solving skills to create and develop animations using the computer coding program Scratch. Year 3 will be using code to add sounds, movement and backgrounds to their animation projects. Year 4 will be working on more complex tasks such as scoring and navigation when developing games.


During term 2 3/4 students from 3/4KE and 3/4JA will participate in a series of lessons as part of a Little Bits Bag Alarm Design Project. Students will generate, develop and communicate electronic circuit design ideas and decisions using technical terms and detailed diagrams to solve a problem.


Design and Technologies - Lunch Box Blitz

Students will investigate how they will prepare, package, transport and store their lunch to keep it safe and fresh.
Performing Arts
Students are developing their musicianship skills. This includes reading music notation and playing the recorder with particular attention to correct technique. We sing and play the ukulele,  increasing our chord knowledge and  improving our strumming patterns. We work together and individually to create interesting  musical compositions that demonstrate a variety of musical elements such as pitch, rhythm, dynamics, tempo and form.
Japanese
Students will be learning vocabulary for parts of the body, and more adjectives so that they can describe people and creatures. They will continue to learn reading & writing of hiragana sounds and words.
